HARLAXTON - Dorm Life

So this is the first wave of Harlaxton photos. Here we go. This is my dorm room in the Carriage house of the manor. It’s pretty standard as far as dorm rooms go. It’s very similar to American dorm rooms. My bunk is on top. I always wanted a bunk bed when I was a kid, but I’m afraid that the appeal of it has worn of in my old age.

For my sister: this is a picture of the toilet. We share two toilets and three showers between nine people. Again fairly similar to America. The only difference is that the toilet bowl is a lot deeper and holds less water. We don’t have any bidets at the manor, but I did have one in my hotel room in London. (More on that at a later date.)

HARLAXTON - Carriage House

This is the outside of the Carriage House, which is the building where my room is. It is a separate building from the Manor House, and is located about 300 meters down the hill from the main building. It’s very toasty compared with the manor, which is nice.

HARLAXTON - Schroeder Lounge

This is Schroeder Lounge, which is one of two main rooms that students like to hang out in. The advantage to this one is that it is across the hall from the refectory, so people often wait here to before meal times. (Featuring my friend Sara, playing the inquisitive student.)

HARLAXTON - Stairs

Stairs leading up to my British Studies Seminar Class

HARLAXTON - Morning Room

There are no classes in the Morning Room, as it is being renovated right now. We did find a lovely poster of Brad Pitt in the window though, and it made us a tad bit homesick.

HARLAXTON - The Great Hall

This is the Great Hall. It is mostly used as performance center for dance troupes that visit from around the area. The first two pictures are from the doors at either end. The third photo is the chandelier in the Great Hall, which is the biggest in the manor. It’s about three feet in diameter.

The middle picture is the fireplace in the Great Hall. Several scenes from the 1999 remake of The Haunting were filmed in or around Harlaxton. This happens to be the fire place where (spoilers) Owen Wilson was decapitated in the movie. We were all able to stand within it (when it wasn’t burning) without bumping our heads.

Grand Staircase

These stairs lead up to the higher levels of the manor where student dorms are located. They remind me of the stairs from Titanic, and I like to pretend I’m Kate Winslet when I walk up and down them.

This is the ceiling above the grand staircase. It stretches up three stories and during the day, it glows like the sky.
